Louis Vuitton, Los Angeles
Peter Marino, in collaboration with Shawmut New York
2015
For the Louis Vuitton flagship store on Rodeo Drive, Peter Marino has created a luminous box on two levels, paced by
a series of horizontal white and reflecting blades at different angles, through which the light from the interior emerges. The result is an iridescent urban object, where the corner of the entrance is fitted with a full-height glazing to offer a view of the retail setting to the street, with a large evocative sculptural chandelier suspended in the atrium: a large reception space faced by the balconies of the two levels of the store. Here stands the staircase custom-made by MR, a rectilinear structure that reaches the first level, rising inside the space as its true landmark feature. The staircase faces shoppers at the entrance, inviting them to ascend on wooden steps that extend the flooring material of the ground level. The sequence of steps, interrupted by a landing, is figuratively supported by a full volume in white, containing luminous display niches. Particular care has gone into the design of the balustrade and handrail; panes of extra-clear tempered glass are framed by a mirror-finish steel structure, concluding in two clearly separated overlaid plates, also to form the initial portion of the structure that makes a perfect square at the intersection of the horizontal and vertical parts. Inside, in an independent way and at a lower height, the cylindrical handrail seamlessly extends, covered in natural-tone leather, emerging and detaching from the balustrade of glass and steel, and echoing the hue of the wooden steps.
